Submerged near the north end of Riverside Park lie the remains of the sidewheel steamboat War Eagle. Just over 150 years ago the War Eagle caught fire and sank. But not before setting the dock, warehouse, and other boats ablaze. In April 2018 Wisconsin Historical Society maritime archaeologists documented the site. On May 13th find out more about remote sensing technology they used. And about the detailed sonar image of the War Eagle shipwreck site.
We spoke with Peggy Derrick, the Executive Director of the La Crosse County Historical Society, about the program.
The program is free. Sign up at the La Crosse County Historical Society. Now the War Eagle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places!
